Some Deep Tissue Massage Side Effects

During a deep tissue massage, a massage therapist applies slow strokes and firm pressure to reach deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues than in Swedish massage. Deep tissue massages works well to treat chronic aches and pains, but it also helps to relieve tightness in stiff necks, the back, legs, and shoulders. Its goal is to relax the muscles, and it often does. At other times, side effects occur during or after therapy, but they usually can be minimized with good communications.

Four Side Effects of Deep Tissue Massage

If you experience one or more of these five side effects, talk to your massage therapist.

1.Pain
Sometimes pain occurs during a massage because the muscles are not used to being manipulated. If it does not, it may help to use ice on the sore areas to reduce inflammation. This is also a good time to avoid extreme exercise or exertion.

2.Sore Muscles
Sore muscles from a deep tissue massage feel a lot like those from a physical workout but usually improves over the next few days. Soreness usually occurs because the muscles are not used to being manipulated.

3.A Headache
Headaches are common after deep tissue massage and can occur when the head is in an awkward position during the massage. They usually go away as the day comes to an end.

4.Nausea
One of the things a deep tissues massage does is release toxins from the body, and as a result, nausea symptoms arise. That is why massage therapists recommend drinking a lot of water and avoiding strenuous activities for the rest of the day.

If you experience these symptoms, and they get worse or do not go away, talk to your therapist about your discomfort.
